Old In-Laws (August 2012)

I love my ex-in laws and feel fortunate to still have the chance to see them and visit with them occaisionally.
Before Dylan left for Guam we swung through for a quick visit with Berneice and Paul (the kid's grandparents, of course) in Troy, Mo.

Re-visiting August

August 5, 2012 The family got together.
Mom and Rose drove over from St. Joseph. Five hours.
Art and Linda and Brian along with his new wife and his three youngest children were there along with other nieces and nephews of varying ages.
It was before Dylan flew to Guam.
We fixed spare ribs and many, many vegetarian dishes..or, I fixed many dishes. Linda brought a fruit salad and everyone else showed up. Which was the requisite.
It was Dylan's going away party.

family picture catch-up

Elliot trying to get free.

Ray...oh so handsome (gosh I love my sons!)..

Elliot the stinker. "neigh, neigh" is what he says, "riding" his horse or carrying a play horse over to me and "galloping" it up my leg..
Indeed, "neigh, neigh"...:)

having missed recording the boys and others

Ray turned twenty yesterday and he and I, because his brothers were not available, went downtown to Sycamore for dinner. It was lovely, absolutely a la carte, and although I was to begin my travels into Vegan-ese, I decided to partake of their ice box cake for desert, knowing that the rest of my dinner, wine included was Vegan, I'm sure.... hm..(where was I?..oh yes). Elliot of course was with us and bored and crawling around the floor and then sitting in my lap. He loves gazpacho and gnocchi and was completely transfixed by the ice-box cake, sitting completely still while I talked with Ray, drank my coffee (black, of course) and scooped one after another spoonful into his ready and waiting mouth. His stillness suprised me, it was as if  he was in a sugar-coma. He remained there during the ride home, talking some and waving his arms around as if to make a point near the end, the point being most likely, "More ice-box cake please!"

Did Ray have a nice birthday? I don't know. He kissed me on the cheek, thanked me for the card and cash and walked up the drive to his father's house, going in to study for his first physics exam. All I know is that he likes college, is meeting many new people and is hanging around with one of his old girlfriends, who is also attending the same school with a dual major. They have both grown up he said. They have both changed.

where we are now

Dylan stood at the counter eating his cereal this morning, waiting for the pop-tarts to finish in the toaster. His body is tall, fit and tanned. He has been working out, drinking protein drinks and lifting weights. Still thin, he is bulking up. Yesterday he took the pre-entrance exam for a branch of the military. Today he again will go and talk with a recruiter. He wants to do this. He wants to get away. His father and I have both suggested college first then the military. He would prefer the military first, then college. He prefers to be his own person, to follow a completely different path from his brothers.
He has chosen the Air Force. His dad was in the Air Force and was stationed in California during the Vietnam War and was in late enough that he didn't ever go overseas. Once the war ended he moved to San Francisco and met his first wife. They married, he went to college. They divorced. She remarried. He returned to Missouri to finish his Master's Degree at the University. He began working at the University and has been there ever since.
We met at the University. We both worked in the same department at the time, Soil Sciences, which was under the aegis of the Agronomy Department before it moved (not literally) to the School of Natural Resources, then Agriculture, then finally, Engineering. His lab and his portion of the department moved, equipment et al, to the school of Engineering. Ray, our second son, is following in his father's footsteps in this area of interest. He too is studying Engineering (his father's first degree pursuit, at Rolla--UMR, before the military, before California). Ray's area of interest is Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Structural Engineering.
Dylan does not know what he wants to do. He has thought of a business degree (emphasis, finance). He has thought of Accounting (my mother's undergraduate). He has thought of teaching high school math and this morning, he has been invited by one of the CardioThoracic Surgeons at Boone to view a surgical procedure which is why he was awake, showered, dressed and finishing breakfast by six-thirty and out the door soon after. Add that to the list, he is thinking Pharmacology or Medicine. He does not know.

The weather, so hot last week, has cooled significantly.
There are birds that sing outside and the cicadas are quieter.
A young woman from the radio station has been using the cicada bodies in different dishes, to eat.
My lone tomato plant has not produced yet, but the pepper plant has been very pepper-productive.
Ray and I met this past week for breakfast and Chuck and I will breakfast together sometime this week and next week will be Dylan's week. He doesn't breakfast much with his mom. We see each other all the time anyway.
Life is good in this middle age and very satisfying.

good morning new year!

Last night there was to be a radio show. Was being the operative word. I was going to greet the New Year with music.

With nothing better planned I arrived at the station three hours early and began choosing the music,  picking through the new arrivals first, finding a theme of coffee and tea in the titles before moving to the music library, to the older cd's and vinyl. The choices were what I thought was a nice mix of blues, jazz and gospel. Little Richard singing gospel. It was going to be good and fun.  BG came in to the music library while I sat reading and talked to me about all the people he has met by doing his radio show. He had just completed a short gig for First Night Columbia before going on the air at ten. While we talked he checked his clock, having timed out his show. Eventually he moved back into the air room and I returned to the couch to read more. Then the cell phone rang. It was ten thirty and Ray was on the other end, feeling sick, feeling nauseous, feeling dizzy, freaking out. "Well, what is your dad doing?...He is?..Well have you taken some tylenol for the fever?..Calm down, breathe slowly..It's okay..Do you want me to come over and get you?"... The answer was "Yes". .."Okay. Well grab a blanket and pillow and I'll be over." Thinking that I could just bring him back to the station and he could lay down on the couch. James was in the offices and would be there all night so I got his number to call, "Just in case.." and thankfully I did because just in case happened.

Ray was sick. He was pale. He stood on his father's back porch with a thermometer in his mouth. "Can you read this mom?"..."Oh honey, no, I don't have my...well yes, here they are.." said while putting on glasses. "Ninety-eight point six." ..."Well maybe it had cooled down while you were looking at it."..."Did you take the tylenol?"..."Yes.."..and so we talked briefly before he retrieved the pillow and blanket and returned to the porch, then to the car. Driving down Broadway there were a fair number of revelers. We talked as we moved, heading West, past the radio station, calling James to let him know he would have to fill in for me. Nearing the place to turn Ray felt that need to vomit. Pulling over I stopped, he opened the door and puked and puked and puked. After stopping at a gas station to pick up some electrolyte solution we finally were home and walked through the front door. "I feel better." he said, heading back to my room where he would sleep for the night while I took the couch.

At midnight we heard the deep boom, boom of the fireworks. I continued reading before going to sleep.
The morning which dawned gray has turned bright, sunny and cold.
The strata is in the oven, the coffee is made.
Today I'll finish the required testing for work, peruse the market and look at real estate.
Good morning morning and happy new year!
