(Looking back) Charlevoix and beyond..

Ernest Hemingway was probably one of my dad's favorite writers and as a teenager I enjoyed reading his short stories. So it was nice to get up to Michigan and see some of the places where he was said to have been. We went other places also..

Like to a farm that has become it's own cottage industry through very hard work and planning.

Of course, at the end of the day, we were always back where we began. Comfortable and satiated with good food and drink and talk.
Susan preparing another wonderful meal. The ultimate hostess.

Labor Day weekend in Charlevoix..

Charlevoix is a town of three thousand that explodes during the summer months and then slowly closes up from Labor Day through October. After October I suspect there are nothing but locals and a few stragglers who keep their summer houses (or second houses) open. My aunt and uncle are two such people..

He is a professor emeritus at the University of Michigan. He is currently writing another book and Charlevoix is a great place to get away from it all. It allows peace and quiet for him and the town has a nice library and coffee shops and other things to keep my aunt occupied.

There was plenty of time to sit around and visit..

Or to go for walks..

Or visit the library and buy a few used books.

and peek in to the children's section,
and see where children can sit and read..

in the trunk of a "tree"..(how cool).

Mom, Rosie and Me

In early September, mother, Rosie and I, drove from St. Louis, stopping in Illinois to see the Lincoln Library and then going through Kalamazoo to see an Aeronautical Museum, which was at one time free and now has a hefty charge (granted 8.00, but when you are expecting free..), we were on our way to Ann Arbor to visit with mom's sister who had just retired from the University.

We spent time visiting family in Ann Arbor and going to Zingerman's and visiting farms.
We had the most wonderful meals..Prepared by my aunt (of course)..

It was nice to sit around and visit.

Getting to know Rachel and John's sons (who we rarely see).
